Hosiery Glossary

Hosiery Glossary: The Essential Guide to Professional Legwear

1. Construction & Technical Specifications

  • Denier (D): A unit of measure for the linear mass density of fiber. Lower denier (e.g., 10D-20D) indicates a sheerer, more transparent look, while higher denier (e.g., 80D and above) results in an opaque, durable fabric.
  • Needle Count: Refers to the total number of needles on the knitting machine’s cylinder. The needle count determines the density and fineness of the fabric:
    1. For Cotton/Athletic Socks: Common counts include 120N, 144N, 168N, and 200N. A higher count in this range produces a denser, more durable, and smoother fabric.
    2. For Fine Hosiery & Pantyhose: These require much higher precision, typically ranging from 240N to 400N (and sometimes up to 480N for ultra-sheer luxury styles). A higher needle count in hosiery allows for a micro-fine mesh, superior transparency, and a silky-smooth touch against the skin.
  • Gauge: A measure of the fineness of the knitted fabric, representing the number of stitches per inch.
  • Toe Closing Techniques
    1. Hand-Linked Toe (Authentic Seamless): A traditional, premium finishing technique where each individual stitch of the toe is joined to the body of the sock by hand. This requires highly skilled labor and creates a zero-bulk, perfectly flat seam. It is the ultimate choice for luxury dress socks and sensitive feet, as it completely eliminates any ridge or irritation.
    2. Auto-Linked / Machine-Linked Toe (Modern Seamless): Utilizing advanced knitting technology (such as Lonati or Santoni machines), the toe is closed automatically during the knitting process. While it creates a "seamless" feel that is significantly flatter than a standard Rosso seam, it is a machine-automated process rather than hand-stitched. It offers an excellent balance between comfort and production efficiency, ideal for high-performance athletic socks.
  • Welt / Double Welt: The finished top edge of the sock or hosiery that prevents unravelling. A "Double Welt" is folded over and knitted back into the sock for added durability and a secure fit.

2. Performance Materials & Yarns

  • Combed Cotton: A softer, stronger version of cotton made by treating the fibers to remove short hairs and impurities. It is highly resistant to pilling and ideal for premium athletic socks.
  • Spandex / Elastane: A synthetic fiber known for its exceptional elasticity. It provides the "stretch and recovery" properties essential for a perfect fit and shape retention.
  • Moisture-Wicking: A functional property of certain yarns (like treated Polyester or Nylon) that pulls sweat away from the skin to the exterior of the fabric, keeping feet dry and comfortable.
  • Mercerized Cotton: Cotton yarn that has undergone a chemical treatment to increase luster, dye affinity, and fabric strength.
  • Melange Yarn: A yarn produced by mixing fibers of different colors to create a variegated, heathered aesthetic effect in the knitted fabric.

3. Specialized Features & Techniques

  • Graduated Compression: An engineering technique where the pressure is highest at the ankle and decreases toward the top of the leg. This promotes blood circulation and reduces fatigue (commonly found in HTS 6115.10 products).
  • Terry / Cushioning: A knitting style that creates loops on the inside of the sock (Full-terry or Half-terry). It provides extra padding, impact absorption, and warmth—essential for performance sports socks.
  • Jacquard: A sophisticated knitting process that allows complex, multi-colored patterns to be woven directly into the fabric structure rather than printed on top.
  • Anti-Microbial / Anti-Odor: A specialized finish or yarn treatment (often involving silver ions) that inhibits the growth of bacteria, preventing unpleasant odors during long-term wear.
  • Arch Support: A reinforced elastic band knitted around the mid-foot area to provide a snug fit and prevent the sock from sliding inside the shoe.

4. Commercial & Trade Terms

  • MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity): The lowest number of units required for a customized production run.
  • OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer): A service where we manufacture products based on your specific designs and brand requirements.
  • ODM (Original Design Manufacturer): A service where we provide the design and technical development based on your concept, followed by production.
  • Private Label: Products manufactured by our mill but sold under the customer's own brand name and packaging.
